Arena Managers
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) is very concerned about a number of recent reports of children becoming sick
while participating in indoor ice arena events. Emissions from ice resurfacing equipment utilizing internal combustion engines and inadequate
ventilation most likely contributed to the reported problems.
Although the USEPA reported incidents did not originate in Minnesota there were two reported incidents of high levels of carbon monoxide (CO)
in ice arenas reported this past winter to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). MDH along with USEPA, is reminding owners and managers
of enclosed sports arenas the importance of maintaining good indoor air quality. This is especially important for enclosed sports arenas that operate or allow the operation of internal combustion vehicles within their facilities. Proper engine maintenance and facility ventilation is very important in
maintaining good indoor air quality. With these efforts and continued air monitoring as required per Minnesota Enclosed Sports Arena rules, we should
be able to avoid these types of public health problems.
